Bulletproof COFFEE– Good Or Bad Idea?

FD 4aa coconut_oilFD 3 onedaydiet5FD 1 butter

By now we have read a great many articles– some for this drink and some against. We have also done our own experiments and here is what we’ve found…

Bulletproof coffee can be a very healthy thing, but like all good things it can also be abused and turned into a not-so-good thing. When we first discovered this strange-to-us drink, it was being advertised as a diet for losing weight and we were also told it MUST be made with a certain kind of coffee and a certain kind of oil made from coconuts… so we decided to do our own experiment!

Into our kitchen I went- poured a cup of coffee (hubby doesn’t use the expensive kind that we were told it must be), put butter into it (ours has salt in it), added our regular coconut oil and some stevia, blended it well and guess what! It was very tasty and very filling- a good thing to include in your diet- you would quite possibly not need a diet pill- how awesome is that!

Yes, the more natural and not processed our foods are, the better they are for us and chemical-free is definitely the way to go for good health.

There are many ideas and suggestions out there, so I will put the ones I feel have the most merit here for your further information.

We found a lot of companies are pushing MCT oil, but after reading up on it we’ve decided not to recommend it. MCT Oil is Manufactured – Coconut Oil is Natural. We refer you now to this really great article written by Brian Shilhavy, who actually lived in a coconut producing area of the Philippines for several years with his family, observing firsthand the differences between the diet and health of the younger generation and those of his wife’s parents’ generation still consuming a traditional diet.

MCT Oil vs. Coconut Oil: The Truth Exposed

After experimenting with this, we discovered that just stirring your coffee with the butter and oil is not the best way to go– Coconut Oil Coffee should be Blended, Not Stirred… That’s the Secret to the most delicious success!

As I cruised through a great many articles, I’ve discovered so much about how the coconut is beneficial to our health- talked with a couple of my doctors and was told that the most natural and beneficial thing I can do for my thyroid (which is still very low and needs help), is eat a lot of natural saturated fats and one suggested avocados and coconut oil would help me the most! IT HAD NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT TO WORK WELL, OUR THYROID GLAND NEEDS GOOD SATURATED FATS!  I know medical doctors are not allowed to tell you about natural ‘cures’, but must only tell you to use drugs. I believe we need to change that! I already eat avocados sometimes and have coconut oil for cooking and this new bulletproof coffee– looks like I’ll increase both– look out thyroid, here it comes!

  3. Next, grind the almonds and walnuts until they begin to turn into a flour, but not so much that they turn into nut butter.
  4. Add in coconut, spices, and salt and pulse for 10 seconds.
  5. Next, add the carrots, syrup and dates to the food processor, and mix until the dates become well chopped.
  6. Using a cupcake tin with plastic wrap or wax paper strips, place about 2-3 Tbsp of mixture in each cupcake hole and press down for even hardening.
  7. Place in freezer for 1 hour to harden.
  8. Cover with coconut whipped cream.

Coconut Water Kefir

This drink is basically fermented coconut water. It is an unbelievably rich probiotic drink that also contains really high amounts of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes.

Coconut water kefir is believed to be the most beneficial probiotic beverage because it has a much more potent effect on the digestive system than any dairy probiotic food such as yogurt.

Some folks buy it already made and some prefer to make their own. To make your own, you will find instructions here.

More on our thyroid–

All my life I was told we must have iodine for our thyroid and it was so important that it was being added to our salt. Now I’ve been getting more complete information. It seems very little is in our salt and we need to eat sea food and greens that contain iodine and iron. A good Naturopath should be able to take a blood test and guide you in eating and taking the supplements best for your body. My husband and I have both been told to limit our salt intake and the pink Himalayan salt is recommended, so that is what we’re using now.

FD 3 Coffee 9-Healthier-1Paleohacks has recommended 9 ways to make your coffee more healthy.  We especially like 7 of them and sometimes even add some of our whey protein powder, turning it into a bulletproof smoothie.  1. Avoid Artificial Sweeteners And Refined Sugar- use raw honey or stevia  2. Avoid Artificial Creamers- use real cream or even almond milk  3. Use Filtered Water and Organic Beans- some coffee beans have been heavily sprayed  4. Add a pinch of Ceylon Cinnamon to help control your blood sugar  5. Add Grass-fed Butter to Coffee- saturated fats are wonderful and filling.  6. Add Coconut Oil to Coffee- possibly the best saturated fat you could choose  7. Add Cacao to Coffee- especially nice for mocha lovers, and healthy too.

We’ve been hearing a lot about Intermittent Fasting lately, so I think this is a good time to refer you to the article I did on FASTING some years ago.

What Is Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting?

Basic Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

Bulletproof Coffee Fasting is like intermittent fasting, except you are consuming Bulletproof Coffee recipes in the morning.

What makes Bulletproof Fasting so much better?

  • Healthy fats from grass-fed butter and coconut oil provides a stable current of energy, sustaining you through the entire day.
  • Coconut oil increases ketosis, boosting your metabolic rate up to 12%.
  • Coconut oil leads to greater losses of fat tissue.
  • Coffee raises cell energy while inhibiting muscle-building for a brief period. This causes the muscles to ‘spring back,’ building more muscle as soon as you eat.
  • Bulletproof intermittent fasting extends your life, improves brain function and strengthens your immune system.

How To Make Perfect Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof coffee is popular for a reason. This high fat low carb coffee is rich, frothy and tastes awesome. Here’s a simple version of how to make basic Bulletproof coffee.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp grass-fed butter (like Kerrygold)
  • 1-2 Tbsp of coconut oil
  • 2 cups hot freshly brewed organic coffee
  • add-in spices, flavors or sweetener like NuNatural & SweetLeaf (optional)

Instructions:

  • Brew coffee. This can be espresso, drip, french press, etc. and if you like you can preheat your blender with hot water while your coffee is brewing, then empty it when your coffee is ready.
  • Add coffee, butter and coconut oil to blender, blend and froth.
  • Add any extras you desire: Cinnamon, vanilla, dark chocolate, sweetener (honey or stevia).
  • Blend until there is a thick layer of foam on top like a latte. Yes, you can also use a hand held blender – they’re inexpensive and work great.

Here are some tips we picked up along the way…

1. Not all coffee is equal. The wrong coffee (those containing mycotoxins) will zap your energy, leaving you lethargic and irritable. Choose organic coffee to avoid chemicals.

2. Only use grass-fed butter like Kerrygold. Butter from grain-fed animals has a different fat composition. It doesn’t blend as well, doesn’t taste as good, and lacks fat soluble vitamins (which is one of the reasons this coffee is ‘bulletproof’). Don’t use low-fat or butter substitutes!

3. Butter alone does NOT make your coffee Bulletproof. The coconut oil in your Bulletproof coffee promotes high energy, fat loss and increases brain function. It also makes the coffee have a better feel in your mouth.

4. Don’t use Bulletproof coffee as a total meal replacement for a long period of time just because you’re losing a lot of unwanted weight. Bulletproof coffee is very filling, so this may be tempting, but you should eat a good chemical-free meal once a day- or at least 2-3 times a week, so your body won’t be missing out on important nutrients, protein and vitamins that it needs.

5. Blend, blend, blend… or it won’t taste the same. Stirring won’t emulsify your Bulletproof Coffee. To get that rich, creamy texture you MUST use a blender.

6. If you want to add a sweetener, use a good stevia like NuNaturals or SweetLeaf. Use caution when adding organic syrups and raw honey. The extra carbs add up quickly because of the sugar content and can be a problem for some low carbers.

About talknshare

My study of how to achieve and keep good health began when I was 18 and has been my lifelong passion. I have learned much over the years and when my T.O.P.S. group dissolved, I created Talk 'N Share. Life happened and I have not done anything with it until now. Since the beginning of this year I have learned many important things and wish to share with others, who like myself, may find it nearly impossible to lose those last few pounds and maintain the loss already achieved.
